Provide stability to moms in need.

Vancouver moms are in crisis.

The pandemic has forced many moms out of work and this has wreaked havoc on family finances. Pre-COVID, over 30% of single moms were food insecure. The rising cost of groceries and a year of pandemic have made it worse.

Members of The Mom Squad stand with moms by helping them keep food on the table for their children.

When moms in need can provide stability to their families, they are less anxious and worried, and their kids benefit from having a mom who is the best parent she can be.

All it takes is $35 a month to provide grocery support and stability to a family in crisis. Will you join The Mom Squad and give monthly today?

Meet Eliza

Eliza joined Mom2Mom six months ago. She is already seeing the difference monthly practical and emotional support makes.

“I got connected to Mom2Mom through my social worker,” explains Eliza*. “I was getting out of a violent relationship and I had recently lost my mom to cancer. I felt like I had to put my grief aside to be a mom to my three boys. I felt like I was leaving myself in the darkness. I started to become more and more depressed.”

Eliza’s social worker suggested she join Mom2Mom so that she could connect with another mom in the community. “Someone who I could bond with and who could help me figure out ‘mom-things’ since I didn’t have my mom anymore,” she explains.

That was in February 2020. Then the pandemic hit and because of public health restrictions, Eliza had to wait six months before she could meet Rebecca, her relationship volunteer.

“This made me sad and anxious because I felt so alone,” says Eliza. “With everything I was going through, by the time fall came, I was honestly afraid to open up. But the moment I met Rebecca, we connected right away.”

“I first met Eliza in August. I picked her up to go grocery shopping and we ended up sitting in my car in the parking lot while she talked and cried. It was an honour to be there for Eliza, to listen and remind her that she’s doing a good job. Because we can’t meet in person right now, we text weekly and can’t wait to be able to go for a coffee when it’s safe to do so.”

“At the end of our first conversation, Rebecca said, ‘You are doing a good job.’ It’s nice to have someone give you that encouragement.”

At the time I didn’t feel like a very important person in my household, but now I’m reminded all the time that I’m a good mom.”

Under normal circumstances, Rebecca would join Eliza for grocery shopping once a month and meet for the occasional walk or coffee. But because Mom2Mom is carefully following public health guidelines, all in-person meetings have been cancelled for the time being, including those opportunities for moms and volunteers to spend time together. Still, Eliza shares that she feels nothing but blessed since being part of Mom2Mom

The grocery support that Mom2Mom provides has been a miracle for my family. I have three boys aged 12, nine and three, and all they do is eat. I am buying groceries at least once a week. The extra support helps me out a lot.”

“If one of my boys gets sick and needs antibiotics, I can now afford to get the medicine, as well as the food we would normally get.”

“If it wasn’t for Mom2Mom, I would probably be one of the loneliest people in this city,” says Eliza.

“My boys have appreciated having Mom2Mom for our family, because they see the joy that it brings me. Because I don’t feel so alone. It’s the outlet that I needed.”

I feel like my role in Eliza’s life is to remind her she’s not alone and that she has someone to turn to if she needs help. Eliza absolutely counts on the monthly grocery support provided by Mom2Mom and is so thankful for the help. It makes a big difference for her family.
